Oakley: New signings have to be right for us

Assistant manager happy with summer work so far but says Dons are still looking for more...

Matt Oakley hasn’t ruled out the possibility of MK Dons making further summer signings but insists they will only move for the right players.

The Dons have added six players to their ranks ahead of the 2019/20 season, with the most recent acquisition that of goalkeeper Laurie Walker at the start of this month.

Clubs in Sky Bet League One and Two have until the end of August to make signings and Oakley revealed that the Dons are looking at one or two potential recruits.

“We've got our eye on one or two, as we will have throughout the season,” Oakley said in his pre-season press conference at the Dons’ training base at Bisham Abbey. “If [those signings] happens now, great but if it happens in January then it will give us a boost then.

“The chairman has been great with us and has said he will support what we want to do but we'll only make the decisions when they're right. We won't make decisions just because we can or because we need numbers - it has to be right.

“We will only sign players if they are going to make them better. If not, we can use our young players and we will give them the opportunity in pre-season, giving ourselves the time to make the right signing.”

On the six summer additions already in the door at Stadium MK, Oakley commented: “I've been really impressed with all the signings so far.

“I'm pleased we've got a couple of games next week, building up nicely towards the season. Now we’re getting to the games, we’re getting to see how they move, work together and their relationships too.

He concluded: “We’ve got a good group and it's looking good.”
