Paul Tisdale was keen to praise a ‘committed’ performance from his MK Dons side after their 2-0 victory over Newport County at Stadium MK.

The Dons made it three Sky Bet League Two wins in a row courtesy of two second-half goals from Ousseynou Cisse and substitute Chuks Aneke on Saturday - a result which keeps them within two points of the automatic promotion places.

It was a deserved success for Tisdale’s men, who could even afford to miss a first-half penalty, and the manager was quick to congratulate his players in his post-match press conference.

“I’m very pleased,” Tisdale said. “It was a good scoreline, which says a lot about the way we played.

“We did [deserve the win]. It was a really good game against a team who went for us. They changed things at one-nil and tried to put pressure on us. It was a tough, robust and committed performance - I’m delighted with that.

“At one-nil, the game is never over. We were trying to get that second goal and it wasn’t the case of accepting the one-nil. We tried our very best to put more pressure on them and eventually we got that second goal.”

He added: “We’re certainly developing. I congratulated the team on the manner of the performance. That was a result and performance that delights a manager.”

The opening goal of the game arrived from a well-worked corner routine, which was taken short before Conor McGrandles’ inch-perfect cross found the head of Cisse, who converted.

It was sixth goal that the Dons have scored this season direct from a corner and Tis commended the squad on their continued creativity from set pieces.

“You can never underestimate the value of scoring a set piece in a nil-nil game," he commented.

"Newport have done well this year on set pieces so there was a good chance that a set piece would be involved today - thankfully it was ours.

“We had a flurry of them just before and we tested all areas. The players have to have the instinct to try different things and they did. I can’t thank them enough for having that confidence. I’m really pleased with that.”
