Minutes for Dons in Northampton friendly

Walker scores in Northampton friendly...

26 February 2019

A number of MK Dons players were handed valuable match minutes on Tuesday Afternoon as they faced Northampton Town in a behind-closed-doors friendly.

The likes of Lee Nicholls, Mitch Hancox, Ryan Harley, Lawson D'Ath and Stephen Walker all took to the field from the off, with Robbie Simpson and Dylan Asonganyi also handed starts.

Elsewhere, David Kasumu, Finn Tapp, Oran Jackson and Matthew Sorinola were all in action. Meanwhile, Under-18s Jay Bird, Jenson Wright and Jamal Sule were used off the bench.

The Dons had the first chance of the afternoon, as Robbie Simpson saw his effort end narrowly wide of the goal.

It was Northampton, however, who took the lead with 18-minutes on the clock as Daniel Powell's deflected cross found the back of the net. 1-0.

A combination of D'Ath and Simpson looked to draw the Dons level just five minutes after the opener, but the latter was unable to get on the end of D'Ath's cross after some good defending from Ryan Hughes.

Northampton's keeper then produced a close-range reaction save to deny Asonganyi after the striker was picked out by Simpson's header.

The equaliser came on 38-minutes, as Stephen Walker used his pace to get onto the end of Simpson's pass, his initial shot hit the post - before Walker headed home from close range. 1-1.

Minutes before the half-time whistle, Nicholls saved well from Williams' dipping half-volley.

Hancox and Harley then combined well on the right before the former's driven cross caused trouble inside the area. After two blocked shots, Northampton cleared their lines.

It was Harley who had the next chance in the game, his left-footed strike curled narrowly wide.

Northampton thought they had retaken the lead with 20-minutes remaining as he headed past Nicholls, only to be denied by the offside flag.

Morias then had the final chance of the game, only to be denied by a strong Nicholls save, before the keeper then claimed the following corner.

Speaking after the clash, Edu Rubio said: "It was a really good opportunity to get 90 minutes under our belts, given our league fixture was postponed.

It was a competitive and even game and we’re happy with everyone’s application and work-rate.”

MK Dons XI: Nicholls, Hancox, Tapp, Jackson, Sorinola, Kasumu, D'Ath, Harley (Sule 80), Walker (Wright 55), Simpson (Bird 46), Asonganyi.

Unused Subs: Rose.
