Dons boss happy with result and performance in Leasing.com Trophy success...

Russell Martin was pleased to see his players’ efforts finally rewarded with a victory in Tuesday’s Leasing.com Trophy tie with Coventry City.

Second-half goals from Kieran Agard and Joe Mason saw MK Dons progress through to Round 3 of the Leasing.com Trophy as well as secure their first win since mid-October, and their first under the management of Martin.

“It feels good,” the Dons boss said in his post-match press conference. “We’ve been on the wrong end of some unfortunate results in recent weeks so I’m really pleased with tonight’s result.

“I’m delighted for the players more than myself because they deserved that, after the work they’ve put in over the last few weeks.

“The second half pleased me the most. We didn’t get going in the first half. We had some passages of really good play but we gave them too many chances, too easily.

“We made a couple of tweaks at half-time which worked really well. We could have easily come out for the second half with our heads down, moaning that it wasn’t working, but the players showed real courage to stick with it and keep believing in themselves.

“We had control in that second half. That started with Lee. He was so composed in possession and was the spare man more often than not. It’s stuff we’ve worked on in the last few weeks so it’s a credit to the boys for sticking with it and believing in it.”

He continued: “It’s something to build on. We’ve needed a result to kick-start us and hopefully tonight gives us that.

“We’ll keep building and improving. There is loads we need to touch on, as well as loads of positives, and we’ll move forward with that.”
