Russ: Mental break was as important as physical

2 December 2019

MK Dons weren’t in action over the weekend due to their elimination from the Emirates FA Cup, and while Russell Martin admits he’d of loved to have played this past weekend, a weekend break is good for both the mind and the body.

With no game Saturday, the squad were given a rare break, meaning they could reset mentally and physically – something he feels is invaluable in today’s game.

“The mental side of football is often overlooked,” Martin told iFollow MK Dons ahead of Tuesdays’ clash with Coventry City. “For players to perform at their best, they need to be mentally fresh, mentally right. A lot of work goes into getting players physically right but the mental side is really important to me.

“They've had a few days with their friends and family, they've worked extremely hard last week. They deserved a break, and hopefully, they'll show what they're about tomorrow.

The visitors at Stadium MK tomorrow night are Coventry City, who currently sit fifth in the Sky Bet League One table, and Mark Robins’ side are one Martin has been impressed with this campaign.

“I really liked Coventry when they came here - it was a good game on the day. It was probably a fair result, and we'll be aware of what they'll bring. But it's about us, how we can impose ourselves on the game, and that's what we have to concentrate on. Huge respect to what Mark Robins has done there under difficult circumstances too.”
