Praise for 'under-the-radar' Joe

Defender receives special mention from his manager...

19 December 2019

Russell Martin has paid tribute to defender Joe Walsh for his consistency and often under-appreciated performances in an MK Dons shirt.

Walsh has played every minute of league football since Martin’s appointment as manager, impressing many with his solid performances at the back.

The defender, in his fourth full season at Stadium MK, is one of the longest-serving players in the current squad and one of only three players in MK Dons history to achieve multiple promotions.

Martin was asked in his pre-match press conference on Wednesday whether he thinks the Welshman goes under the radar in terms of his service to the Club.

“I think he does,” Martin told the media. “I think when someone's been at a club for a long time, and played so well for so many years, the level of performance that they give is taken for granted.

“He has been magnificent in the last three or four games, and ever since I came in really, in terms of the way he applies himself, not only on the pitch, but in training and in the building.

“He's not the loudest but he leads by example and I think players look at him for that. I loved playing next to him last season.

“He is one of those players that, if you're up against it, the others can turn to and know that he's going stand up to whatever the other team throws at you. He’s a warrior, and an old-school defender, but he can also play.

“Personally, I think he's a better player than he thinks he is. We’re trying to get him to believe in that.”

He continued: “He is really appreciated by us and the rest of the squad, and I think – and hope - the fans appreciate what they've got as well.”
