Russell Martin reserves mention for Alex Gilbey while provides an update on Jordan Moore-Taylor...

Russell Martin reserved special praise for Saturday’s goalscorer, Alex Gilbey, after another “excellent” performance from the midfielder.

Gilbey opened the scoring in MK Dons’ Sky Bet League One clash with Doncaster Rovers courtesy of a terrific curling effort from 25-yards – his second goal in three matches.

While the effort wasn’t enough to earn the Dons all three points, the 25-year-old did draw praise from his manager following the game.

“It was an absolutely brilliant goal,” Martin told the media in his post-match press conference. “We kept the ball for a long time and then what a finish!

“Alex has been excellent. He’s in good form and he’s doing exactly what we’re asking him to do.

“I’ve wanted him to do less. I think he ended up doing too much stuff and then at the crucial points, he was knackered. He’s taking that on board and he’s playing really well.”

He added: “He’s a really good player and he’ll be a big player for us.”

Gilbey wasn’t the only one to receive a mention from the manager, with Regan Poole also praised for his performance after being called into the side at the eleventh hour in place of Jordan Moore-Taylor.

Martin provided the following update on Moore-Taylor afterwards.

“We need to have a look at it,” he commented. “We obviously had to get him back to fitness after his head injury and then in the warm-up, he’s felt his knee.

“He said he could play, which is credit to him, but it would have been worse for us had he started and then needed to come off straight away. Hopefully he won’t be out too long.

“Fair play to Regan Poole, though. He came in and was excellent.”
