Martin: Players making January easier for us

Russell Martin discusses mindset heading into the January Transfer Window...

19 December 2019

With the January Transfer Window fast approaching, Russell Martin insists he isn’t after just adding numbers, only players that will bolster his MK Dons squad.

In under two weeks time, the Transfer Window will open once again, which will provide MK Dons manager Martin with an opportunity to add to his squad for the first time since taking charge in November.

While keen on freshening his side up with new arrivals, Martin insists he won’t sign players for the sake of it, having been impressed with how his current squad have performed since his arrival.

“We do need to add some freshness and something a bit different, that doesn't change, but we're not going to sign people for the sake of signing people,” Martin said in his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s clash with Gillingham.

“We’ve got a lot of really good footballers here. The players have been brilliant and are doing everything we’ve asked of them. It’s up to them to maintain those standards now, so that January becomes easier for us.

“We're lacking in certain areas but with the way they have been performing, maybe we need less players than we originally thought. We don’t need extra bodies so if we bring people in, they've got to really elevate where we are in terms of ability and also what they had in the dressing room.

“I’ve been there when new players come in. You started looking over your shoulder but if they are the right player coming in, a player of really good ability and a good person, then you accept it.

“As I’ve said, I think we've got a group here, who have answered every question we've given them so far. If they keep rising to the challenge, and we can add a couple of quality players, then that would be fantastic.”
