Dons striking right Christmas balance

Russell Martin hopes to strike the right balance this Christmas by allowing his players to spend time with their families while also ensuring they are prepared for the important Sky Bet League One clash with Southend United on Boxing Day.

Martin’s men travel to Roots Hall on Thursday looking to bounce back from defeat last time out against a Shrimpers side who sit one place below them in the Sky Bet League One table.

While an important fixture for the Dons, boss Martin also wants to make sure his players and staff have the opportunity to spend time with loved ones this Christmas in and amongst their match preparations.

“It’s important to have a balance,” Martin said in his pre-match press conference ahead of Thursday’s trip to Essex.

“We have to be professional and sacrifice a few things that you could otherwise enjoy if you weren’t a footballer. That sacrifice is well worth it, given the job we do, and you’re a long-time retired in this profession so there is plenty of time in future to enjoy Christmases.

“That said, it’s important the players and staff spend time with their families as well. I trust the lads to do that and still be ready and prepared for our game.”

He continued: “I love the Boxing Day games and I think everyone in football does too – players, staff and, of course, fans. I used to love going to watch games on Boxing Day as a kid and I’m enjoying being involved in them now.

“There is always a good atmosphere. It’s also nice that we’ve got two home games over this period, which means players can get their families down to watch games.”
