Tis praises gutsy AFC Wimbledon performance

MK Dons secured passage to Round Two of the Carabao Cup with a penalty shoot-out win at AFC Wimbledon...

Paul Tisdale praised a ‘gutsy’ performance from his MK Dons side in their Carabao Cup success over AFC Wimbledon.

The Dons progressed through to Round Two of the Carabao Cup for the 10th successive season after an eventful encounter at the Cherry Red Records Stadium - one which had five missed penalties, stunning strikes, late equalisers and a shoot-out to decide the winner.

“It was a really good game,” Tisdale said in his post-match press conference. “It was a really interesting game, with so many angles - it had everything!

“It's a small, tight arena and we got this type of game. There was passion, intensity, vigour, determination, it's what we expect. They played their game, we played ours.

“I was really proud of how we played. It was really gutsy and we finished the job - just!”

Tisdale’s men had to bounce back from a stoppage-time equaliser from the hosts after Luke O’Neill scored with virtually the final kick of regulation time to cancel out David Kasumu’s stunning strike which had the Dons in front following a 1-1 first half.

The Dons, though, held their nerve and converted four of their five penalties in the shoot-out which proved enough to see off AFC Wimbledon.

“I said very little to them,” Tisdale commented when asked what he had said to the players prior to the penalties being taken.

“They were frustrated after conceding and wanted to talk about it but I told them to shut up and think about what's coming next. “There's no magic key but we kept it cool on the penalties and Lee made his saves.”
