Prior to MK Dons Good Friday clash at Meadow Lane, Notts County hadn’t tasted defeat against the top five in front of their own fans.
The Magpies had previously run out winners against Tranmere Rovers and Mansfield Town at Meadow Lane, while they also earned a point against Lincoln City and Bury.
With a potential banana skin on the table, Wheeler was pleased to see the Dons return to Milton Keynes with three points.
“Every game is a different challenge,” Wheeler told the media following the full-time whistle on Friday.
“Every game at the end of the season, you’ve got to take it one match at a time – it’s such a cliché – but we’re all really chuffed that we got through a difficult game.”
The win over Notts County lifted MK Dons back into the automatic promotion places, however, Wheeler insists the Dons aren’t getting carried away as he knows there are more potential turns to come.
“The promotion race will probably swing a couple more times before now and the end of the season - we’ve just got to just do our best to stay where we are.
“It’s still so, so tight, you have no idea how the games will go for the teams around you. Port Vale is another challenge for us on Monday and that’s all we are focussing on now.”
David Wheeler and MK Dons return to action on Easter Monday when they take on Port Vale at Stadium MK in their penultimate home fixture of the season.
