Asonganyi scores three in Under-18s win...

1 April 2019

A hat-trick from Dylan Asonganyi and a goal from Jamie Robinson helped Milton Keynes Dons Under-18s to a 4-0 win over Newport County at Woughton-on-the-Green on Saturday lunchtime.

The Dons took the lead with their first attack in the third minute as a through ball split the defence and found Asonganyi just inside the box whose firmly struck shot found the back of the net. 1-0.

Asonganyi was looking lively during the first quarter of the match, shortly after his goal, he hit a curling shot just wide of the post as the Dons dominated proceedings.

Just before the half hour the Dons dominance was rewarded on the scoreboard after Asonganyi’s shot from the edge of the area could only be parried by the Newport keeper.

The rebound found Robinson who tucked the ball home from close range. 2-0.

Asonganyi and Robinson were combining with increasing potency and after a good exchange of passing between the pair in the 41st minute, the Dons number nine hit a first-time right-footed shot low into the back of the net. 3-0

Just before the break, the Dons could have made it four as Asonganyi produced a dangerous deep cross. A lunging Robinson could only direct his effort on to the post before Newport scrambled the ball to safety.

On the hour mark, the Dons struck the woodwork again when Robinson’s close-range effort hit the crossbar.

Two minutes later the game was made safe when the Dons were awarded a penalty. After Robinson's shot was parried by the keeper, another Dons player was chopped down as he attempted to get to the rebound, leaving the referee with no choice but to award a spot-kick.

There was never any doubt that Asonganyi would take it, and he duly sent the keeper the wrong way putting the ball low into the right-hand corner. 4-0.

The hosts saw out the remainder of the match with a degree of comfort, limiting Newport to very few chances and creating opportunities to score more than the four goals they converted.

Speaking after the match Under-18s manager Edu Rubio said: “I am really pleased with the boys today.

“We were a bit leggy in the final 15-minutes and struggled to produce much in attack in the latter part of the game – but I am very happy with the performance.

“In the final third we were very good today – we created good chances and on another day could easily have scored more.

“We were solid defensively and although we looked tired later on and had to do more defensive work in our box, we always looked comfortable at the back.
