Dons facing Player of the Season at Prenton Park

MK Dons face the Sky Bet League Two Player of the Season this weekend at Prenton Park and he’s a player that boss Paul Tisdale knows very well.

James Norwood has scored 29 goals for Tranmere Rovers this term and that scintillating form was recognised last weekend when he received the top League Two honour at the EFL Awards. He was also named in the EFL Team of the Year.

Tisdale worked with the now-Rovers striker at Exeter City and handed him his league debut in 2009. Back then, Tis’ job was to help Norwood find the net - on Saturday, he’ll be looking to stop him from doing so.

“He’s had an incredible season,” Tisdale said of his former forward in his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s clash with Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park.

“I had him for his formative years as a professional footballer. I signed him from college as an 18-year-old when I was with Exeter [City]. He was very young at the time.

"I remember him making his debut as a substitute away at Leeds United in the first game of the season. He did some good really good things.

“I get on really well with him. He’s a very likeable chap. I enjoyed speaking to him when they were here earlier in the season.

“He’s really developed as a footballer. He’s developed his craft - he knows what he is and he’s very good at it. He’s had a fantastic season.

“We’ll be doing everything we can to keep him quiet, which is easier said than done of course.”

While complimentary of Norwood, Tis did make sure to note that there is much more to Saturday’s opponents than just their in-form striker.

“They’re not just about one player - they’ve got a really good team. [James Norwood] is part of a really good team that Micky [Mellon] has put together.

“Tranmere are going to be a tough team to play against. They’ve got a terrific home record, conceding fewer goals than any other team at home and I believe they’ve only lost three games at home.

“They are a tough nut to crack and [Prenton Park] is a really challenging place to play, but we’re looking forward to it.”
