Healey off the mark

Striker pleased to get on the scoresheet for the first time in MK Dons colours...

6 September 2018

Rhys Healey was pleased to get off the mark on Tuesday night and hopes to add plenty more during his time with MK Dons.

Healey, on loan with the Dons until January, netted the second goal in Tuesday’s Checkatrade Trophy tie with Peterborough United - a bullet diving header into the bottom corner from Ryan Watson’s inch-perfect delivery.

The 23-year-old, who continued his run of scoring for every team he's played for, hopes to continue finding the net and, in turn, help Dons maintain their strong start to the 2018/19 season.

“It’s massive for a striker to get that first goal for a new club,” he told iFollow MK Dons after Tuesday’s thrilling tie. “Now I’ve got that one out of the way, hopefully I can now add more.

“Before I joined I was lacking some match fitness but I’m feeling a bit sharper now. I still need to tidy up on a few things but hopefully I can take confidence from my goal and push on from there.”

Healey’s goal was one of three scored on the night by the Dons, who led the Sky Bet League One side 3-0 at the break.

Posh fought back in the second half to force the tie to penalties but it was Paul Tisdale’s men who would triumph in the shoot-out with Sam Nombe scoring the decisive spot-kick after Stuart Moore’s save.

“That was my first penalty shoot-out,” the Cardiff City forward revealed. “I’ve missed a penalty in a game before so I was a little nervous but, as an attacker, I can’t away from taking a penalty - if you’ve got the opportunity, I think you’ve got to take it.

“Luckily mine just about when in and then young Sam took it upon himself to put it to bed and he did, which was great.”

He continued: “It was a good test for us, especially us boys who haven’t had much game time to show what we can do.

“We were good in the first half. We played them off the park and they didn’t know how to handle us.

“In the second, it was back to front, back to front. We shouldn’t have drawn - it was disappointing to not come away with a win but pleased come out on top on penalties.”
