Gilbey heaps praise on Dons defence

Midfielder full of praise for the defensive performances this season…

22 October 2018

MK Dons have now gone 413 minutes without conceding a Sky Bet League Two and currently boast the second-best defence in the English Football League.

The feat certainly hasn’t gone unnoticed among the Dons dressing room with Alex Gilbey heaping praise upon the back line after Saturday’s 1-0 win over Northampton Town.

“The way we’ve been defending this season has been unbelievable,” the midfielder told the media following the full-time whistle on Saturday.

“Although Northampton were pushing on and getting chances - in my mind I believed we wouldn’t concede - that’s massive for us and we need to keep defending like that.

“The defenders have been superb and Jordan Houghton sits and holds the fort – that allows me to push on and get involved – we’ve got a really good set up at the moment.

“I know me and Jordan Houghton are working really well together at the moment, he’s very defensive minded so I know he’s always going to be there for me. When you’ve got a back six like us you know you can push on a bit more as we are defending really well.”

The 23-year-old also spoke highly of the atmosphere Paul Tisdale has created at Stadium MK, stating he’s loving life at MK1 this year.

“Off the back of last season, this place [Stadium MK] was a horrible place to come. This year has been different - I’m loving every minute of it and long may that continue.

“I’m coming to work every day enjoying what you’re doing – and that’s a big difference. We’re coming to games now excited to play football and that’s what everyone wanted to do when they were a kid.

“We’ve got to kick on now. We aren’t looking up though, you never know what happens but we just need to take it one game at a time.”

Gilbey put in a faultless performance in the middle of the park against Northampton Town and feels he’s starting to hit top form after his injury lay-off.

“It’s taken me a few weeks to get going but now I’m feeling fully fit and I’m really enjoying my football - I’m glad the manager stuck with me and shown faith in me.

“The physios told me to put everything I’ve got into my recovery and you’ll never know what happens. I’m so thankful that my knee has healed and I’m loving being back.

“I should’ve scored today but I didn’t expect it and that’s one of them things. If we carry on playing like we are then we’ll score goals – if we score goals and win games I don’t care who finds the net.”
