Preview: Shrewsbury Town

All you need to know ahead of today's Sky Bet League One clash...

5 May 2018

MK Dons travel to Shrewsbury Town later today as they look to finish their season on a positive note.

Saturday's 2-0 defeat against Scunthrope United last Saturday marked MK Dons' relegation from Sky Bet League One but they will be looking to sign off with a victory today and put some smiles back on faces of supporters before the summer break.

Kick-off is 5.30pm.

It's safe to say that Shrewsbury Town have surpassed even their own expectations this season. Paul Hurst's side pushed both Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers to the wire before falling short of automatic promotion.

Having finished the 2016/17 campaign in 18th place, The Shrews were one of the favourites to suffer relegation this season. Instead, they've finished in third place as they look to secure promotion into the Sky Bet Championship come the end of the season.

In the summer of 2017, Hurst added the likes of Lennell John-Lewis, Jon Nolan, Stefan Payne, James Bolton and Omar Beckles to his side. Elsewhere, they secured the services of highly rated Manchester United keeper Dean Henderson for another season and Ben Godfrey and Carlton Morris from Norwich City.

MK Dons' relegation from Sky Bet League One was confirmed following a 2-0 defeat to Scunthorpe United at Stadium MK.

Rory McArdle and Ivan Toney scored first-half goals for the play-off chasing Iron and that proved to be the final nail in the coffin for the Dons, who will be playing Sky Bet League Two football next season.

Shrewsbury were held to a 1-1 draw against Blackpool last weekend and took the lead in the clash after Sam Jones' 20-yard strike beat Christoffer Mafoumbi, who got a hand to the ball but failed to keep it out.

Blackpool drew level as Delfouneso nodded in from close range. The linesman initially ruled it out for offside, but the goal was given after consultation with the referee.

Andy Haines will referee today's fixture – it'll be the first time he has run the rule over MK Dons this season.

The last time he oversaw the Dons was back in April 2017 during their 2-1 win over Southend.

The Tyne and Wear born-official has taken charge of 32 games this season and has issued 97 yellow cards and six red.

His assistant referees are David Plowright and Richard Bartlett and Paul Hobday is the fourth official.
