Pitch renovation begins at Stadium MK

Head Groundsman Joe Aylett explains renovation process...

29 May 2018

Renovation works have begun on the Stadium MK pitch ahead of the 2018/19 season.

The annual process, led by Head Groundsman Joe Aylett, started on Tuesday morning following several weeks of pitch hires and community events.

Explaining the process to mkdons.com, Aylett said: “We were out clearing the pitch this morning before Hewitt Sportsturf came in - they are a company who have worked on Wembley’s pitch and other pitches such as Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

“Using a scarifier, they will strip all the pitch out without damaging the Desso - they will take away all the grass and debris.

“Once that’s all done, the seeder will come in and seed all over the pitch. Some areas, where it is shallow rooted, will require more seeding than others. We’ll then put 20, 20kg bags of sand over the top of that.

“Once that’s all been levelled, in come the 16 25kg bags of fertiliser and then it’s down to us to water the pitch.

“Two weeks after that process is finished we should start seeing the heads of the plants coming through. In four weeks, we’ll see some good coverage and in six weeks we’ll have some really good coverage - in time for our first pre-season friendly.”
