Oakley: The fans are a testament to this Football Club

New Assistant Manager reflects on his first weeks at Stadium MK…

24 June 2018

Despite only arriving at MK Dons two weeks ago, Assistant Manager Matt Oakley’s first impressions of the Club, the staff and the fans are that of a positive nature.

Oakley departed Exeter City alongside Paul Tisdale and Mel Gwinnett and with the trio now in place at Stadium MK, the former Leicester City midfielder couldn’t speak highly enough

Speaking at the Fixture Launch Breakfast sponsored by the University of Buckingham for the Club’s Commercial Partners, Oakley said, “I’m amazed by the energy inside the city of Milton Keynes.

“I’ve come into the stadium a couple of times via taxi and spoken to them about the Club - they don’t even talk about relegation it was all about this season.

“The fans are so positive, they love this club and the people inside all want to do well - it’s a great feeling. It doesn’t feel to me like a club that has been relegated and that gives us energy.”

Oakley continued, “We’ve had two years failing in the playoffs at Exeter so we were a little bit down, but we’ve come here and this place has given us a pickup – that’s a testament to the fans of this Football Club."

Oakley also noted that the job of himself and his staff is to now pick the players back up and give the fans performances to be proud of.

“This is a great Club - it’s got very, very good people around it.

"We’ve just had the one bad thing which is the results on the pitch and you get that vibe that this place can get back to where it needs to be. Getting promoted is the goal at the moment we have to realise this is a League Two Club.”

He concluded, “We’re not hiding from that fact this is recovery and this is a reboot but it’s an exciting time for us as staff. The players aren’t thinking about last season, they see a freshness to it and they’ve got people with energy around them.

"It’s our job to help them get their confidence back because in that changing room are some really good players - they just need that confidence if we get that right then we’re onto a good start.”

The Club would like to thank those in attendance for Thursday’s Fixture Launch Breakfast and their continued support over the past seasons.
