Oakley gives his thoughts on fixtures

Assistant Manager analyses 2018-19 fixture list…

26 June 2018

Fixture Release Day is one of the most exciting days in the calendar year for football fans – but it’s also the time Football Clubs can start planning their upcoming campaign.

It was revealed last week that MK Dons will open their 2018-19 Sky Bet League Two campaign against Oldham Athletic in what will be Paul Tisdale’s first competitive game as the Dons boss.

Tisdale’s men will then entertain Bury in his maiden Stadium MK fixture, while the season will come to a close with Mansfield the guests at MK1.

Speaking to iFollow MK Dons following the release of the fixtures, Assistant Manager Matt Oakley gave his thoughts on the opening month of games.

“It’s an interesting start for us next season as we face two teams that were relegated with us so it’ll be interesting to see where we all sit with the recruitment, squad and those sort of things – so that’s what we are focusing on at the moment.

“We have some good home games early on which will help with our squad and their recovery in-between games and travel because the early stages are a tough period and obviously the cup game is at home too.

“We’ve got some difficult away games with Yeovil and Swindon and we also face Morecambe on a Tuesday night which is interesting because it’s a difficult one travel wise for the fans."

Oakley added "It’s exciting and it’s when things start to become real and you can start putting the plans together and working on your scouting.”

Now the fixtures have been released, the planning has started and the excitement is building. The start of the season is just over six weeks away – it’s safe to say Oakley, Tisdale and co. can’t wait to get started.

“We’ve had the excitement of coming here, seeing everything and meeting people and the energy from inside the Club. Now it’s focusing on getting our plans in place, getting our coaching right, getting used to the lads and the routines of how we both work. All of those things come into it – it’s time for business.

“It’s a difficult period for us because we haven’t seen the squad, we know certain players and the injured lads that are coming back and we know we’ve got some good young players too.

“We can’t stand still, we always need to keep improving, we’ve got the pre-season games coming up and that’s a great chance to get to know these players and their strengths and weaknesses."
