After being appointed Assistant Manager, mkdons.com takes a closer look at the playing and coaching career of Matt Oakley.
Matt Oakley was born in Peterborough, and like Paul Tisdale, spent the formative years of his career with Southampton Football Club.
The midfielder made his debut for the Club against Everton at just 17-years-old – whilst still a trainee with the Saints.
The 40-year-old became a regular for Southampton in 1996 scoring three goals in 28 games during the season as he helped Southampton avoid relegation. He’d remain with the South Coast side for over a decade and featured for them during their 2003 Emirates FA Cup Final defeat to Arsenal.
In 2006 he departed Southampton moving to Derby County where he skippered the Rams to promotion into the Premier League in 2007.
After Derby struggled to get going in the Premier League, Oakley moved to Leicester City in January 2008, he once again donned the armband as Leicester lifted the League One title under the stewardship of Nigel Pearson.
His exploits that season saw him named in the PFA League One Team of the Year alongside the likes of Dean Lewington and Sean O’Hanlon.
At the heart of the Leicester City side, Oakley helped the Foxes reach a play-off Semi-Final before joining Paul Tisdale at Exeter City in 2011.
Oakley is a man with bundles of experience having made over 600 appearances throughout his professional career and after featuring over 150 times for Exeter, the midfielder hung up his boots in the summer of 2017 moving into a coaching position at St James Park.
