Getting to know you: Mitch Hancox

Get to know MK Dons’ latest recruit a little better…

21 June 2018

mkdons.com lists a number of things you may not know about new signing Mitch Hancox.

Involved from a young age
MK Dons' newest defender may only be 24 years old but he has been exposed to first-team football for almost a decade. At the age of 15, while still a student at school, Hancox featured for Birmingham City's reserve side in a Barclays Premier Reserve League clash with Arsenal.

Two years later, he was named amongst the substitutes for the first-team in their Europa League qualifier against Nacional. Then, at the age of 18, Hancox was handed his senior debut - a 10-minute cameo in Birmingham City's Sky Bet Championship clash with Huddersfield Town.

Despite his young age, Hancox has played over 130 professional games during his career and brings a wealth of experience for someone in the early stages of his career.

Championship experience
Although his time at Birmingham City didn't quite work out the way he'd have hoped, Mitch Hancox gained plenty from his time at St Andrews.

Aged 19, Hancox made his Championship debut against Huddersfield Town as the Blues fell to a 1-0 defeat at St Andrews. Throughout the course of the 2012-13 campaign, he would feature 20 times, registering two assists during the course of the campaign.

The following season, Hancox made 14 Championship appearances picking up a further two assists, while he also made his Emirates FA Cup Debut against Bristol Rovers.

An eye for goal
Since breaking into senior football, Mitch Hancox has demonstrated a real eye for goal and boasts a decent attacking record given that he's shared time between defence and midfield.

While on loan at Crawley Town during the 2015/16 season, he contributed to three goals [two goals, one assist] in 16 appearances.

The following season, Hancox played a role in 10 goals [six goals and four assists], including a hat-trick against Boreham Wood.

Hancox's most prolific campaign to date came last term, as he found the net seven times while also contributing five assists. Among those seven goals was another hat-trick - a treble in a 4-1 away win at FC Halifax Town.

Big game player
Hancox is no stranger to big matches having experienced a number of high profile clashes throughout his career already. Although he didn't get onto the pitch, the defender was named in Birmingham's Europa League match day squad during their 3-0 win over Portuguese side CD Nacional aged just 17.

In 2017, Hancox featured for Macclesfield in their FA Trophy Final defeat to York City and despite coming out on the losing side, Hancox earned heaps of praise for his performance. He took the free kick that led to Rhys Brown's leveller having won the foul that led to the set piece.

More recently, he secured the National League title for Macclesfield Town as he curled past Ross Flitney with his weaker right foot scoring his seventh goal of the season in the process. His composure and ability to perform in the big games will now doubt please Tisdale.

Versatility
Versatility is key in any squad and Mitch Hancox has that in abundance having played in a number of different positions during his career.

While mainly utilised as a left-back or a left midfielder - he spent the 2017/18 season mostly as a winger - Hancox has also featured in defensive midfield on occasions as well as at centre-back.
