Young Dons begin with a win

Under-18s triumph at Biggleswade United...

15 July 2018

MK Dons Under-18s began their pre-season campaign with a 3-0 victory over Biggleswade United.

The young Dons, who had support from the Under-23s side, ran out comfortable winners thanks to goals from Recoe Martin, Dylan Asonganyi and Jay Bird.

The side was largely made up of this season’s Under-18s squad but did include several young professionals - Asonganyi, Finn Tapp, Liam Sole, Oran Jackson, David Kasumu and Sam Nombe.

Biggleswade started strong but MK Dons grew into the contest and took the lead 14 minutes in through second-year apprentice Recoe Martin.

Asonganyi and Sole, who have impressed for the first-team this pre-season, caused the hosts problems throughout the first half and their pressure eventually led to a second goal four minutes before half-time - Asonganyi the scorer.

The half-time interval saw eight changes made to the side but that didn’t affect their dominance. Nombe, in particular, was a threat during the second half as MK Dons continue to play with an attacking mindset.

A third and final goal arrived six minutes from time as Bird sealed a second successive 3-0 victory for the Under-23s.

Interim Academy Manager Simon Dwight said: “It was a valuable experience for the players and staff, who managed the conditions well and secured a very good result.

“The objectives that were set for the team at half-time were to shut out the opposition and score a third to seal the game - both were achieved.”

First-half XI: Trialist; Robinson, Tapp, Sule, Sorinola; Wright, Pattison; Martin, Bird, Sole; Asonganyi.

Second-half XI: Jones; Ackom, Jackson, Leach, Brennan; Wright (Pattison 80), Kasumu; Martin (Sule 80), Freeman, Nombe; Bird.

Goals: Martin 14, Asonganyi 41, Bird 84
