Houghton excited for league opener

Midfielder reflects on Tuesday’s friendly…

25 July 2018

With just one game to go until the start of the Sky Bet League Two campaign, midfielder Jordan Houghton believes MK Dons are on the right path to success.

Paul Tisdale’s men fell to a 1-0 defeat in their penultimate pre-season clash against Sky Bet Championship outfit Ipswich Town courtesy of Freddie Sears’ second-half penalty.

Despite the defeat, Houghton believes there are reasons to be optimistic, “We looked solid as a team,” the midfielder told iFollow MK Dons.

“We’ve got a lot of new players, and it takes time to gel but the foundation is good. We look solid and though to play against – which is good to build upon.

“The main thing is our fitness levels, we're getting close to 90-minutes and getting closer to the start of the season.”

Houghton added, “I felt good, hopefully, we can get close to 90 or at least close soon. I came in over a week late compared to the other boys so it has been tough to keep up with them but I'm slowly getting there. That sharpness is still a little bit off but I'll be ready for the start of the season.”

The 22-year-old featured for Doncaster Rovers at Stadium MK last season, and noted, that the day he saw the stadium – he knew he wanted to grace the turf weekly.

“I loved playing here since the day I walked around and even when I played for Doncaster. I remember thinking 'this is a good stadium - I'd love to play here week in, week out.'

“It was a good crowd for a pre-season game as well. Hopefully, we can be flying at the top of the table and we can get some good crowds in.”

With the start of the campaign just around the corner, Houghton admitted he’s struggling to contain his excitement for the return of competitive football.

“I'm really excited. The first excitement always comes in the first home game of the season, we've got another one on Friday before the first game."
