Operating in the heart of midfield of the MK Dons midfield, Alex Gilbey is certainly playing with football a smile on his face.
The 23-year-old’s tireless performance against Morecambe earned Gilbey a place in the EFL Team of the Week for Matchday 20.
His accolade earned him a place in BBC 3 Counties Radio’s VIP list, speaking to the local radio station, Gilbey expressed the enjoyment he’s having this season.
“I’m feeling really good to be fair,” Gilbey told Luke Ashmead and Geoff Doyle.
“The team as a whole are playing really well and I think after a slow start, we’ve picked up – I’m really enjoying my football.
“With me, as long as we are winning games, and I’m playing football matches – I’m happy – long may it continue.”
Gilbey’s opener against Morecambe was his first goal of the season, and just like London buses, his second followed soon after – a statement he’d foreseen in a conversation with Assistant Manager Matt Oakley.
“I told Oaks [Matt Oakley], that once I score one goal, they will all start coming. I didn’t expect them to happen in the same night, but I’ll take it.
“Matt was on me a lot to be fair [Laughs!] - he was telling me I needed to score. I’ve missed a few chances this season, but it was massive for me to get them two goals - hopefully, I score many more.
Gilbey also spoke highly of the confidence in the MK Dons dressing room and noted how every player is enjoying their football.
“The boys are flying and everyone is really loving their football at the moment - I think the fans would be able to tell that.
“I’ve spoken to a lot of fans since I’ve been here and they’ve mentioned they’ve had a frustrating three years. I think the fans deserve this season and the players who were here last year need it too – hopefully, we can them success.”
