Dean & Dons prepared for opener

Lewington looks ahead to today's trip to Oldham...

4 August 2018

Dean Lewington kicks off his 15th season as a professional this afternoon and the left-back is as hungry as ever to be successful.

Lewington & Co begin life back in Sky Bet League Two with a trip to Oldham Athletic and the 34-year-old hopes it is the start of a journey which will eventually lead to a return to the third tier of English football - although, he does insist that the team are approaching the season with a 'one game at a time' mentality.

“We want to be out of the league as soon as possible but we want to do that by breaking it down to one game at a time,” Lewington told the media ahead of today’s match.

“We’ll look at Saturday and deal with that before moving on to the next game. We know where we want to get to but for us, it’s down to the old cliché of one game at a time.

“The quality is certainly here but we have to go and prove it. We have players here who want to make a name for themselves and that will bode well for us, I’m sure.

“After two or three disappointing seasons, it's sometimes hard to stop the motion of going backwards. First, we need to stop the decline and then hopefully we can kick on and move forwards.”

He concluded: “Words are words. I can sit here and tell you we'll be amazing but Saturday will tell us.”
