Chuks Aneke played an hour and scored as MK Dons beat Peterborough United 6-4 in the Central League Cup.

Robbie Muirhead netted a hat-trick while Bradley Bell and Jay Bird were also on target for Edu Rubio's men, who rallied to wrap up the success after being pegged from 4-2 up to 4-4.

The 10-goal thriller at the ABAX Stadium follows last week's 5-4 win over Southend United at Stadium MK, a game which Aneke also scored in and played 30 minutes as he steps up his recovery from a hamstring injury.

The hosts made a lively start and went in front inside four minutes when Idris Kanu headed past keeper Alfie Jones.

Aneke levelled matters from close range on 18 minutes, firing home the rebound after a Posh defender had headed Brandon Thomas-Asante's cross against his own post.

Adil Nabi restored Posh's lead three minutes later but a quick-fire brace from Robbie Muirhead saw the Dons turn it around - his first was a 20-yard strike and his second was a cool finish after rounding the keeper.

Muirhead completed his hat-trick on 51 minutes when he drove a powerful shot into the net after twisting and turning away from his marker.

Danny Lloyd and Nabi both scored spot-kicks as the hosts fought back to make it 4-4 by 63 minutes.

However, the Dons went ahead once again with seven minutes remaining when Bradley Bell turned home the rebound after Thomas-Asante's effort was saved.

Jay Bird completed a high-scoring game from close range four minutes later - the young striker almost added a seventh for the Dons but his shot came back off the crossbar.

Rubio said: "I was pleased with the application, togetherness and desire from the group to win the game."

Starting XI: Jones; Kasumu, Tapp, Jackson; Logan (Bell 46), McGrandles; Thomas-Asante, Aneke (Bird 60), Rasulo, Nombe; Muirhead (Hope 70).
