Alice Hughes nets in 1-1 draw for MK Dons Ladies...

18 October 2017

Alice Hughes rescued a point for MK Dons Ladies against Denham United as the two sides drew 1-1 for the second time this season.

Alissa Down had put Denham ahead on the 17th minute, after she scored a terrific free-kick.

The hosts held on to their lead until the 74th minute, despite the Dons going close before that, with attempts even striking the woodwork on multiple occasions.

With 16 minutes left on the clock, set-piece specialist Charly Wright whipped in an inch-perfect corner, which Hughes headed home to make the scores level.

The sides could not be separated in the final minutes of the game, with both having to settle for sharing the points.

The draw ended the Dons’ six game winning streak, however the point moved them up into second place in the league.

Speaking after the game, assistant coach Charlie Bill believes his side can hold their heads high after their second half performance.

He said:”I felt our performance was a tale of two halves – we started slow and were poor in possession, going a goal down inside the first 20 minutes but in the second half, the team bounced back fantastically well, showing quality in possession, improving our tempo of play, and deservedly got the equaliser.

“We should have taken all three points but the Ladies can hold their heads high after the second half.”

Despite the positives, Bill is aware of what his side needs to do in order to improve.

“We need to start putting a whole performance together, though today we showed once again our good team spirit and resilience.”

After drawing both their league encounters 1-1, a winner will have to be found next Sunday when the two sides meet again, at Willen Road, in the FA WPL Plate competition.

Starting XI: Smith, Burgess, Holland, Newsome, Wright, Doyle (c) (Goodier 65), Clarke, Hughes, Mallett (Gooderham 85), Hazard (Newman 75), Mills.

Unused subs: Payne, Naylor

Goal: Hughes (74)
