League One taking shape

15 May 2017

Following the completion of the 2016/17 regular season, MK Dons now know 21 of the 23 teams they will face in Sky Bet League One next campaign.

Sheffield United and Bolton Wanderers achieved automatic promotion from the third tier this season and will be replaced in 2017/18 by Rotherham United, Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers, who were relegated from the Sky Bet Championship.

It will be the first time the men from MK1 have competed with Wigan in league format, although the two clubs have previously faced each other in the Emirates FA Cup.

The third and final team to move on from League One will be confirmed this weekend, when Millwall and Bradford City go head-to-head in the Play-Off final at Wembley Stadium – the winner will be promoted to the second tier, while the loser will remain in the division.

Meanwhile, League One will welcome Sky Bet League Two champions Portsmouth next season along with fellow-promoted sides Plymouth Argyle and Doncaster Rovers. They take the place of Chesterfield, Coventry City, Swindon Town and Port Vale who suffered relegation in 2016/17.

The Dons will have to wait to discover which other League Two outfit they will take on next season, with the play-offs currently at the semi-final second-leg stage – currently, Blackpool lead Luton 3-2 on aggregate while Carlisle United and Exeter City are tied up at 3-3.
