2016/17 recap – September

11 May 2017

mkdons.com takes a look back at the 2016/17 season, month-by-month...

The Dons endured a frustrating September, coming out on top in just one of their five matches and seeing their winless run at home extend by another four weeks.

That said, the month’s solitary triumph – the 4-1 win away at Fleetwood Town – was one of the performances and results of the season. It was their third victory on the road in the 2016/17 season and had them top of the away-form table at the end of September, ahead of Scunthorpe United on goal difference.

However, their success away from home wasn’t enough to counteract their league-worst home record and therefore they found themselves in the bottom half of the Sky Bet League One table.

GAME-BY-GAME
Northampton Town 3-2 MK Dons – Sky Bet League One (Sunday 4th)
MK Dons came close to pulling off a dramatic comeback at Sixfields but they weren't able to fully recover from three early Northampton Town goals.

Harry Beautyman, Alex Revell and Matt Taylor had the Cobblers three-up inside the opening half an hour but Dean Bowditch and Samir Carruthers both found the net for the Dons to reduce the deficit.

However, Karl Robinson’s men didn't leave themselves enough time to grab an equaliser and, as a result, fell to their first away league defeat of the campaign.

The Dons then went on to dominate the next 30 minutes which included Kieran Agard seeing a penalty saved, before they stood strong late on to earn a deserved point.

Mark Beevers headed the hosts in front but the men from MK1 fought back and levelled through Ryan Colclough at the start of the second half.

An impressive performance saw MK Dons share the spoils with league leaders Bolton Wanderers at the Macron Stadium.

The men from MK1 went close on numerous occasions including through Kieran Agard and George C Williams in injury-time but they were unable to find a way past a stubborn U’s defence.

MK Dons were forced to settle for a point in an entertaining encounter at Stadium MK.
MK Dons 0-0 Oxford United – Sky Bet League One (Saturday 17th)

Ryan Colclough scored a hat-trick and Dean Bowditch converted from the spot as Karl Robinson’s men enjoyed a richly-deserved success by the seaside.

MK Dons returned to winning ways in style courtesy of a superb performance on the road at Fleetwood Town.

However, Karl Robinson’s men conceded against the run of play five minutes later and in injury-time as they were left to rue so many close calls, which on another night would have seen them run out comfortable winners.

The men from MK1 dominated from the first whistle and Ben Reeves’ second-half effort deservedly cancelled out James Vaughan’s early strike.

MK Dons were denied by the woodwork and a superb display by Ben Williams in the Bury goal as they slipped to a cruel 3-1 defeat at Stadium MK.
