2016/17 recap - January

mkdons.com continues its look back on the 2016/17 season – next up is the month of January...

27 May 2017

MK Dons continued their good form under new boss Robbie Neilson by enjoying an unbeaten January in Sky Bet League One.

The stretch included a draw away at Chesterfield and two impressive victories over Northampton Town and Peterborough United – the latter of which was named the team’s performance of the season.

There was one defeat this month, however, and that came in the Emirates FA Cup away at then-Sky Bet Championship leaders Brighton & Hove Albion. That loss knocked the men from MK1 out of all cup competitions.

SKY BET LEAGUE ONE

PLAYER STATS
Top appearance maker: Ed Upson (32)

Top goalscorer: Kieran Agard (10)

JANUARY BY NUMBERS
8 Goals scored in the month’s solitary home match at Stadium MK – the clash with Northampton Town – which is more than the total in their three away fixtures.

4 Goals scored by Chuks Aneke in January, including his Goal of the Season strike against Peterborough United.

31 Second-half minutes it took the Dons to score four goals in the 4-0 win at Peterborough United.

10 Kieran Agard’s goal tally after the month of January – the first Dons player to reach double-figures in the 2016/17 season.

3 Less games the Dons played in January compared to December.

GAME-BY-GAME
Chesterfield 0-0 MK Dons – Sky Bet League One (Monday 2nd)
MK Dons couldn’t turn their second-half dominance into a goal as they were forced to settle for a point at Chesterfield.

Robbie Neilson’s men were well on top from the hour mark and went close through Nicky Maynard and substitute Daniel Powell, who twice went close in the final 10 minutes.

Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 MK Dons – Emirates FA Cup Round 3 (Saturday 7th)
MK Dons bowed out of the Emirates FA Cup despite a spirited showing at Sky Bet Championship leaders Brighton & Hove Albion.

Robbie Neilson’s men matched their opponents but goals in both halves from Israel internationals Beram Kayal and Tomer Hemed proved to be the difference in the third-round tie.

MK Dons 5-3 Northampton Town – Sky Bet League One (Saturday 21st)
MK Dons came out on top in an entertaining eight-goal thriller as they made it four wins from five at Stadium MK.

Kieran Agard opened the scoring before a brace from man-of-the-match Chuks Aneke either side of the break had the men from MK1 in control.

A deflected Darren Potter strike and a fine goal on his Dons and league debut from Harvey Barnes made it 4-1 and 4-2 after goals from Gregg Wylde and Marc Richards, who then subsequently found the net from the spot late on after the Leicester City loanee’s finish.

Peterborough United 0-4 MK Dons – Sky Bet League One (Saturday 28th)
MK Dons delivered a memorable away-day display as they ran out 4-0 winners at rivals Peterborough United.

Robbie Neilson’s men dominated throughout and the opener deservedly arrived on the hour mark – a second for Harvey Barnes in as many games.

That provided a platform for the Dons to build on and they certainly did – Kieran Agard made it 2-0 and moved into double figures in the process.

Back-to-back braces from Chuks Aneke completed a magnificent afternoon’s work, while a clean sheet was also collected as the men from MK1 won successive games.
