Did he mean it?

2 March 2017

Did he mean it? That was the question many were asking after George Williams’ bizarre goal in MK Dons’ 2-2 draw with Bradford City.

With 35 minutes on the clock, the full-back collected a pass near the left-hand touchline before sending in a ball which looped over Bradford keeper Colin Doyle and hit both posts before crossing the white line.

But was it intentional?

“Of course I meant it!” Williams told MK Dons PlayerHD. “I’ve looked up, seen him off his line and thought I’d put it in the back stick.”

“In some ways, we are disappointed we didn’t come away with a win, which shows how far we’ve come.”

“Towards the end, we really pushed like we would get that winner and I thought if anyone was going to nick it, it was us.

“It’s a good point. They are unbeaten here in almost a year – it’s a tough place to come and it was a tough pitch so it’s a good result.

The defender’s goal put the Dons 2-1 ahead at the Northern Commercials Stadium and although they weren’t able to hold onto their lead, Williams was happy to take at least a point back to Milton Keynes.

“No, in all honesty I didn’t really mean it. As it fell to me, I thought I’d put it in there. I heard someone have a go at me because it looked like it was going to go out for a goal kick but somehow it’s gone in – I’ll take it.”

Really?
