Gboly Ariyibi and Ryan Seager made their debuts in the Dons’ final away friendly of pre-season.
Robbie Neilson again took the opportunity to play some of his side for the full game, while Dean Lewington got 80 minutes under his belt on his first outing after recovering from injury.
Two Marc McNulty penalties proved the difference – it’s back to the training field for the Dons ahead of the home friendlies with Brentford and Leicester City next week.
However, it was the Sky Blues who hit the front four minutes later when Marc McNulty scored from the spot after Ousseynou Cisse had brought down Liam Kelly.
Seager almost equalised within 60 seconds but his low drive was well kept out by Liam O’Brien before Lewington saw a shot blocked.
Shortly afterwards, Pete Pawlett sent an effort narrowly over the top as the Dons began to look more threatening.
Pawlett then turned provider for Kieran Agard, who connected well but couldn’t direct a difficult chance on target while, at the other end, Lee Nicholls pulled off a superb stop to deny Maxime Biamou from close range.
The competitive nature of the friendly continued in the second half but the next chance didn’t come until 55 minutes when Pawlett fired wide from 15 yards.
Coventry doubled their lead just before the hour mark when McNulty fired home, again from the penalty spot, after Ethan Ebanks-Landell was adjudged to have fouled him.
As normal with pre-season, changes for both sides followed but far more so for Coventry as Neilson opted to keep players on the field with fitness being key.
