Edu excited for run-in

22 February 2017

Head of Academy Coaching Edu Rubio has spoken of his excitement as his Under-18s get set to kick off their EFL Youth Alliance Merit League 2 campaign.

After starting at home to Peterborough United on Saturday, other notable fixtures include trips to Portsmouth and AFC Bournemouth while there is a date with AFC Wimbledon on the final day of the season.

He said: “I’m looking forward to these games. It’s always quite exciting to play the likes of AFC Bournemouth and Portsmouth.

“I’m quite looking forward to the game against Portsmouth – I’ve got a few friends there and they’ve got a really good Academy set-up so it’ll be a good test.”

Rubio is also intrigued to see how his young Dons treat the final nine games of the season, with plenty on the line for both the second and first-year scholars as well as the schoolboys who will be making the step up next season.

“It’s a massive opportunity for all the boys.

“We haven’t made decisions regarding the second-years yet so there is still something to play for, for them. They’ll be excited to play because they’ll want to show Robbie Neilson that they want to be professional footballers in the first-team next year.

“The first years will be looking to make a statement ahead of next season too and there will be a few Under-16s who will want to show what they can do and prove a point as well.”
