Report: Luton Town 1-1 U21s

27 September 2016

MK Dons Under-21s drew 1-1 with their Luton Town counterparts at the latter’s training ground on Tuesday afternoon.

Jack James put the hosts in front against the run of play but Giorgio Rasulo fired Mike Dove’s side deservedly level almost immediately.

The first chance of the afternoon fell to Luton’s Kavan Cotter, who blazed over after a smart move, before a good tackle from the impressive Juma Omar broke down an opportunity.

Dons hit back and captain Rasulo saw a shot blocked prior to the Hatters’ defence having to clear a number of deliveries into the box as the visitors enjoyed their best spell.

Shortly afterwards, nice play from Peter Kioso and Ben Tilney Rasulo set up a shooting opportunity for Rasulo, who fired wide from 20 yards.

In the last real action of the half, Charlie Burns was on hand to save from Harry Bean, ensuring the sides went in level at 0-0.

The second half was an entertaining one, starting with a shot from Andrew Osei-Bonsu which forced Liam Gooch into a fine save.

Both sides then hit the woodwork in the space of a minute – firstly Luton through Scott Belgrove before the industrious Sam Nombe crashed an effort off the underside of the bar.

Burns was on hand to keep the Dons’ clean sheet while, at the other end, Furlong went within inches of giving the visitors the lead with a rasping 20-yard shot from a Callum Brittain cut-back after a quick counter-attack.

That sparked a flurry of chances for the Dons, who went close through Nombe but, after a clever run, his touch past Gooch was too strong and the ball ran out of play.

Dons’ No.9 was then denied from a Tilney cross before Kioso couldn’t connect with a Rasulo delivery from the opposite flank.

However, against the run of play, Luton hit the front when James fired across Burns into the far corner of the net.

Within three minutes, though, the Dons were deservedly level when Rasulo curled a fine effort into the top left-hand corner from 15 yards.

Dove’s side almost won it in the final minutes but Tilney and substitute Joe Evans were both denied from close range.

Although it wasn’t a success, it was another good work-out as the young Dons continue to develop.

Starting XI: Burns; Brittain; Omar, Jackson (Kasumu 87), Kioso; Osei-Bonsu (Logan 85), Rasulo; Herida (Evans 46), Furlong, Tilney; Nombe.

Unused subs: Pickworth, Bell.
