Martin humbled by award

4 May 2016

David Martin was left feeling ‘stunned’ after being named MK Dons’ Player of the Year for 2015/16.

Martin became the first goalkeeper to win the prestigious award after an impressive season in the Sky Bet Championship – in 38 appearances, the 30-year-old kept 11 clean sheets and put in a number of stand-out displays.

“I was over the moon but stunned,” Martin said after receiving the accolade. “I’ve loved playing this season and going to the grounds that we’ve gone to. We knew we were going to be up against a challenge but I’ve enjoyed that challenge.

“I wouldn’t have got this award, though, if it wasn’t for the lads in front of me. I’ve enjoyed playing with the back four and keeping clean sheets. We’ve had to defend tooth and nail for some of those clean sheets and this award should really go to them as well.”

“To get this award really does mean the world to me.”

“To get this award from the supporters makes me feel fantastic. It’s a hard thing to achieve as a goalkeeper because you are often only as good as your last game, or last mistake.

The Player of the Year award was voted for by the supporters, which Martin believes makes it all the more special.
