Cody’s US side set for Olympic decider

29 March 2016

Cody Cropper and US Under-23s know a victory or a scoreless draw in Texas tonight will see them qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympics.

The US drew 1-1 with Colombia in Barranquilla on Friday in the first leg of their Olympic qualifying play-offs, picking up that all-important away goal which puts them in the driving seat going into tonight’s match at the Toyota Stadium.

Because of the away goal, any win or a 0-0 scoreline would send Cropper and co through to the Olympics, while an away victory or a draw of 2-2 or greater would see Colombia into this summer’s finals.

Should the second leg finish 1-1 then the tie will go to extra-time and penalties if needed.

Colombia dominated the first leg in Barranquilla last week, boasting 75% of possession and outshooting the US 26-6. However, the US were able to contain the South Americans for the most-part and will be confident going into tonight’s decider in Texas.

Cropper was forced on at half time in last Friday’s first leg due to an injury to Ethan Horvath and it’s unknown whether the Dons goalkeeper will remain between the sticks tonight after his impressive display.

Kick-off at the Toyota Stadium tonight is scheduled for 1.30am GMT. There will be no coverage on UK television.
