Captain: Positives in Toffees clash

28 July 2016

Dean Lewington believes MK Dons will benefit from their Premier League test against Everton.

Lewington & Co put in a strong performance against the Toffees at Stadium MK and the 30-year-old captain wants his team-mates to learn lessons from the contest which they can take into the 2016/17 season.

“It was a valuable experience,” Lewington told MK Dons PlayerHD. “The way they play is something we aspire to and we said before the game that it’s going to be a massive learning curve for us.

“As good as it was in terms of us defending and our defensive shape, it was good to watch them and learn what they do.”

“When we find it difficult to break teams down and find problems, how do they go about it? We told the young boys to watch how they do it and to try and learn.

“They are a very good team, they brought down their full squad and played the strongest team available to them. It was hard work but a good run-out for us.”

He said: “Overall I think it was a good test for us. There were some good bits but obviously some things we need to work on.

Despite proving more than a match for Ronald Koeman’s men at times during Tuesday’s contest, the Dons were beaten 3-1 by the Merseyside outfit – Lewington, though, feels positives can still be taken.
