Burns brilliant on debut

25 January 2016

Charlie Burns was named man of the match in his debut for Hayes & Yeading on Saturday.

Burns played a crucial role as the Vanarama National League South side held play-off hopefuls Hemel Hempstead Town to a 1-1 draw at York Road – a result which keeps them out of the bottom three.

The young goalkeeper made a number of fine saves on his first outing for the Berkshire club, including an important block on Jamie Slabber effort’s in the first half and a stunning stop from point-blank range to deny the same man again in the second period.

Burns will be looking to build on his standout showing when Hayes & Yeading travel to Wealdstone this weekend.

Baldock and co also kept their 11th league clean sheet of the season as they moved four points clear in the automatic promotion places and maintained the pressure on leaders Northampton Town.

The right-back, who went close to netting his third goal of the season in the first half, starred as the U’s ran-out 1-0 winners thanks to Jordan Bowery’s debut strike.

Meanwhile, George Baldock helped Oxford United earn a valuable three points in their Sky Bet League 2 clash at Portsmouth.
