Roberts' pride at leading England

24 February 2016

Abbie Roberts had the honour of leading England Under-15s Girls against Germany last week.

Roberts, who features for the MK Dons Centre of Excellence on a weekly basis, captained the side and played the full 90 minutes in Dusseldorf, but was unable to stop England falling to a narrow 1-0 defeat.

“To captain the team gave me a huge sense of pride,” he said. “It was the most enjoyable experience from the moment I was told in the team meeting the night before the match. It has been a real honour to represent my country and being involved in the England set-up has given me some great memories.

“I was both excited and a little nervous just before the match against Germany, but I had to settle quickly as I was heavily involved from the off.”

She added: “Our teamwork was our strength - all of the girls played with high energy and supported each other, almost resulting in an equaliser late on but all in all it was a solid performance.

“The German team were very sharp and quick to attack in numbers. I believe our defence was pretty solid and well organised. I loved every minute and want this feeling again and again so I will continue to work very hard to remain in the England age group squads.”

Football Development Manager James Honeyman said: “For any player to represent their country is a fantastic achievement, but to captain the side is even more special. Seeing Abbie’s dedication, profession manner and desire, it is no surprise to see her rewarded at international level. I am very confident that she will continue to develop and we are all excited to see what is next for the bright young talent.”
