Quotes: Baldock, Powell & Upson

8 August 2016

George Baldock, Ed Upson and goalscorer Daniel Powell react to MK Dons’ opening-day victory over Shrewsbury Town…

GEORGE BALDOCK
On three points and a clean sheet…
“It was brilliant from the boys. The work ethic was there. The gaffer never questions our ability, when we have the ball we’re dangerous, it’s just sometimes there can be lapses of concentration off the ball. Today, we showed how solid and compact we can be. I thought the two centre-halves were excellent and won most things in the air. It turned out to be a really good day.”

“It was a great strike from Powelly. As I said, the lads are really pleased with today. It was tough and a bit ‘touch and go’ at times but the first game of the season is always like that, when everyone’s just settling down and finding their feet.”
On winning goal…

“I’m really pleased. The team, on a whole, is absolutely buzzing in there. It’s been an enjoyable pre-season but we’ve had some questions asked of us recently so hopefully it’s put a few of them to bed.”
On debut victory…
ED UPSON

“I can only recall that last-ditch tackle Joe (Walsh) made to get us out of trouble but apart from that, it was just shots from distance and we all know Dave’s handling is brilliant. He rarely parries or spills anything. He was able to take the pressure off us and his kicking, on a whole, was brilliant to get us up the pitch. Everyone worked their socks off and we’re delighted with the three points.”
On all-round team display…

“It felt really natural. We had a really good game plan and it was an in-depth game plan on how to stop them. It’s always hard to read into pre-season games because you never know if they’re playing their full-strength team or playing the way they want to play. With the information we got from our analyst Ben (Pope), who works really hard, we came with a game plan which worked and it just felt natural. We were able to stop and nullify their attacks.”
On back four’s performance…

On seeing the game out after the goal…
“We were quite professional, I thought. We saw the game out pretty well. We’ve got some experience in the team, along with a few young lads, so know what to do when we’re 1-0 up and it’s coming down to the last moments of the game.”

On making debut…
“I loved it. Absolutely loved it. It’s a pleasure playing in this team alongside Pottsy and with Samir in there, as well as the other lads. I’m really enjoying my football at the moment.”

On building on the victory going into the Millwall match…
“It’s a game I’m looking forward to personally. To get the three points on the first day is always good because teams aren’t sure how they are going to do and it can be quite unnerving. I thought we coped well with the pressure and if we can keep the confidence up we should do quite well this season.”

DANIEL POWELL
On scoring the winning goal…
“It was a great start to the season. The most important thing is that we got the win. Bonus, a clean sheet, and even more of a bonus, I got the goal.”

On tight affair…
“Anything can happen in the first game of the season. We weren't at our best today but still came away with the win, which is a good sign.”

“It was very impressive. We knew it would be tough for them dropping down the league but it’s good support and it shows you what this club are made of.”
On away support…

“We know we’re going to be one of the teams to be shot at so we know we’ve got to come into every game with positive mentality. I think we can do that.”
On confidence boost…

“It’s always nice to get a goal. The keeper got a hand to it but there was too much force behind it! It’s a good start to the season and hopefully I can kick on from this.”
On getting off the mark…
