James Honeyman is looking for MK Dons Ladies to build on their opening-day success when they face last season’s runners-up, Gillingham Ladies.
After beating Denham Ladies 3-0, the Dons visit Gills Ladies at the Corinthians Sports Club in Longfield Kent this Sunday afternoon– kick-off 2pm.
Honeyman said: “It was a good start but not a perfect performance. It is great to get the first win and get rolling with a 100% record but it is vitally important that we build on it this weekend.”
The Gills will be looking to earn their first three points of the season after drawing their opening game 1-1 against Luton Town Ladies.
Last season, the points were shared equally between the sides with both teams beating the other away from home 2-1. However, the Gills did finish above the Dons in the South East Division 1 last season, taking 2nd place, with the Dons closely behind in 3rd.
With those previous results in mind, Honeyman said the following about the challenge the Gills pose: “Gillingham are a very strong side and we are aware that we will need to be at our very best to get something out of this game.
“Results across the weekend have shown that anyone can beat anyone in this league and we are confident that if we execute the game plan, we can come out of this weekend unbeaten.”
The Dons go into the game against the Gills boosted by the returns of Vicky Holland and Hannah Barrett from injury, which gives the side additional options.
There may be changes to the Dons side that started against Denham United Ladies with Honeyman praising the size of his squad: “I look at this squad as 18 really talented players who are all vital to the work we are doing.
“We will not keep the same 11 week-in, week-out, as all the players are unique and bring something different.”
