Report: Dons 1-2 Wolves

5 April 2016

Wolverhampton Wanderers came from behind to beat the Dons 2-1 at stadiummk on Tuesday evening.

The men from MK1 had taken the lead as early as the sixth minute through Nicky Maynard, but Wolves hit back and won it through goals from George Saville and Jack Price.

Karl Robinson freshened up his attacking options with Carl Baker, Samir Carruthers, Daniel Powell and Nicky Maynard all coming into the starting XI.

The latter ensured the Dons got off to the perfect start, turning home Carl Baker’s dangerous delivery from close range on six minutes.

Wolves responded well to going behind and James Henry flashed an effort off target from a tight angle before Antony Kay was forced to clear inside the area.

Shortly afterwards, Kay was causing problems in the visitors’ half, recycling a set-piece and winning a corner, the first of four for the men from MK1 as they enjoyed good spell of pressure just past the 20-minute mark.

Joe Mason threatened the Dons’ goal on 29 minutes when he turn inside and fired goalwards but Cody Cropper was up to the task.

At the other end, Darren Potter fired a long-range effort wide of Carl Ikeme’s right-hand post while, just before the break, Carruthers flashed a shot not far wide after making room for himself on the edge of the box.

The Dons started the second half brightly and Dominic Iorfa had to be alert to block Kay’s volley at the back post after Wolves had failed to clear a corner.

Equally, a corner at the other end asked questions of the Dons, who dealt with it relatively comfortably after Joe Walsh thwarted Danny Batth 12 yards out.

The visitors’ pressure was growing and they were level on 62 minutes when George Saville powerfully headed home Henry’s cross from the right.

Maynard was presented with a chance to put the Dons back in front, albeit a difficult one, and he volleyed over the top, this coming before no-one could connect with his cross.

Shortly afterwards, Powell was denied from point-blank range after the Dons had kept the ball alive but, on the counter, the visitors hit the front when Jack Price swept home another Henry delivery.

Robinson introduced both Alex Revell and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas as his side went in search of an equaliser but they found it difficult to create any clear-cut chances and ultimately came away with nothing.

Starting XI: Cropper; Baldock, Kay, Walsh, Lewington (c); Potter, Forster-Caskey; Baker (Murphy 65), Carruthers, Powell (Emmanuel-Thomas 78); Maynard (Revell 74).

Unused subs: Burns, Long, Williams, Bowditch.

Goal: Maynard (6).

Bookings: Kay, Forster-Caskey, Emmanuel-Thomas.

Attendance: 12, 131 (1,653 Wolves fans).
