Martin: 'We are like brothers'

15 May 2015

Dave Martin says he and his fellow promotion-winning team-mates have a special connection.

Martin kept a club record 24 clean sheets as the men from MK1 secured a spot in the Sky Bet Championship for 2015/16, but the keeper was keen to stress that it was a collective effort.

“Everyone stepped up their game this year, on and off the field,” he told MK Dons Player.

“It’s about the whole team – the way we play, keep the ball, score goals. To be a part of this group is magnificent, we are all like brothers.”

Martin was speaking alongside Antony Kay and the Dons’ stopper couldn’t praise the centre-back highly enough.

“Kaysy has been unbelievable, really, really good. Add Kyle in there as well and some games I haven’t had anything to do, they’ve been that good! The whole defence have provided great protection for me all the way throughout the season.”

Kay returned the favour, lauding Martin’s displays before discussing the final-day drama which saw the Dons leapfrog Preston North End into second place.

“The man at the side of me has been immense – he’s kept so many clean sheets and set a record in the process.

“It feels absolutely unbelievable. When we started the day we knew what we had to do and we had a great first half. The crowd got involved and then we knew we were going up before the final whistle which was surreal!”

He added: “The gaffer has been brilliant, as has Richie who has come in and been immense. All the staff though, the chairman and the fans, who came in their numbers and were brilliant.”
