Dean: One of my best days

7 May 2015

Dean Lewington has been with the Dons since the very start and he says Sunday’s promotion was arguably his best moment.

The captain scored twice in last weekend’s decider to help the men from MK1 to a 5-1 victory – one which saw them leapfrog Preston North End into second place after the Lilywhites' defeat away at Colchester United.

“It’s up there as one of my best days at the Club,” Lewington told MK Dons Player. “The cup games are always great but they are just one off, whereas this has been a whole year’s work and, for that, it’s more satisfaction that elation.

“I remember when we won League 2, I had a smile on my face all summer. I’ve got a host of emotions right now and it just needs to sink in - I’m sure when I’m sitting on a beach somewhere it finally will!

“We set out what we wanted to achieve at the start of the season and we’ve achieved that. It’s good when everything comes together and the way we’ve done it has been great - in the last 10 games, things clicked and we played so well.”

He continued: “I haven’t scored twice since I was a kid - when I was eight or nine, I was prolific! People are saying to me (my first goal) was the best ever scored at stadiummk!”

Lewington’s terrific first strike, coupled with his second-half header, helped the Dons all-but secure the victory with 15 minutes reaming, meaning all attention for the final quarter of an hour turned to the game involving Preston.

“It was a strange feeling but it was nice just knowing we’d done our job. If that news would have come through and it still had been 0-0 then it would have been edgy, but the fact we were four up meant we could enjoy the last few minutes.”

Lewington, who took his league appearance total for the Dons to 609 during the 2014/15 season, was also keen to reserve a special mention to the fans for their support throughout the campaign.

“A massive thanks to you,” he added. “A lot of you have been here from the start and you should enjoy this because it’s been a good season and these don’t come around very often.

“We’re lucky to have fantastic fans here that stay with the team the whole way. We really appreciate the support and it’s just nice to just repay them back.”
