2015: Dons clinch promotion in style

30 December 2015

The next game in mkdons.com’s review of 2015 is the most memorable – it’s the 5-1 win over Yeovil Town which secured a first-ever promotion to the Sky Bet Championship.

The Dons, in front of close to 17,000 people at stadiummk, secured second place in League 1 courtesy of the convincing success coupled with Preston North End’s defeat at Colchester United.

Starting XI: Martin; Spence, Kay, McFadzean (Hodson 75), Lewington (c); Potter, Alli; Hall, Carruthers (Reeves 73), C Baker; Grigg (Bowditch 69).

Unused subs: McLoughlin, L Baker, Powell, Cole.

Then came a nervy last 15 minutes while the Dons awaited news from Essex, which eventually came in stoppage time – Preston had been beaten and the men from MK1 were promoted to the second tier.

Will Grigg then made it four with a header and after Spence’s own-goal reduced the deficit, Lewington grabbed a second late on to restore the four-goal cushion.

Player of the Year Carl Baker got the men from MK1 off to the perfect start with a low drive before Dean Lewington and Darren Potter added goals, the former with an excellent free-kick. Re-live the 2014/15 with Unforgettable – the official DVD from the promotion-winning season, which features all the memorable victories and goals.

Unforgettable is priced at £15 can be bought either online or from the Club Store at stadiummk/kiosk at centre:mk.
