George Baldock’s Oxford United provided the biggest shock of the Capital One Cup first-round by trashing Sky Bet Championship outfit Brentford 4-0.
Michael Appleton’s side found themselves 3-0 up after only 12 minutes thanks to goals from Liam Sercombe, Danny Hylton and Kemar Roofe. A stunned Griffin Park then saw John Mullins add a fourth early in the second half.
Defender Baldock was involved throughout Oxford’s 1-1 draw with Crawley Town on opening day.
The Sky Bet League 2 side did fall behind early in the second half to a Gwion Edwards goal but Danny Hylton responded with an equaliser 10 minutes later to earn a point in their first game of the season.
Also involved on opening weekend was striker Tom Hitchcock, who made his debut for Stevenage in their League 2 encounter with Notts County at the Lamex Stadium.
Hitchcock was brought on as a 61st minute substitute by Teddy Sheringham and he went close to marking his first appearance with a goal but he was denied by Magpies goalkeeper Roy Carroll.
The striker’s debut then quickly turned into one to forget when he was dismissed following an off-the-ball incident in stoppage time with County defender Mawouna Amevor, who was also shown a red card.
Meanwhile, Harry Hickford played the entirety of Chelmsford City’s 2-2 draw with Oxford City this past weekend.
The Clarets took the lead on two separate occasions in the highly-entertaining National League South contest but were pegged back both times by immediate equalisers. Both teams also had penalties saved.
Centre-back Hickford was also involved in City’s Monday night clash with Hemel Hempstead Town, which finished 1-0 to the away side.
The 20-year-old went close to levelling for his loan club in the final 20 minutes but, from a corner, his header could only find the crossbar and the rebound was punched over by the goalkeeper.
