Dove delighted with his young Dons

16 April 2015

Mike Dove heaped praise on his Under-18s side after they were crowned Youth Alliance Cup champions of the South.

The young Dons beat Cheltenham Town 2-1 at stadiummk to secure the area title and book a place in the national final against Oldham Athletic.

“I’m really pleased,” Dove told mkdons.com. “This game is just about winning a game so I’m thrilled for the players.

“It was a really hot day and when I saw that, I felt it would work in our favour given our style of play. We like to keep the ball and control the play, whereas Cheltenham like to play with energy.

“We could have made it a little easier for ourselves by going two or three goals in front, which I felt we deserved to do – we just didn’t take our chances and their keeper made a couple of good saves too.

He added: “This is a memory for the all lads, especially those who won’t be staying on with us next year. It’s something nobody can take away and they should enjoy it.”

Celebrations won’t be dragging on for too long, however, as Dove and his side face Barnet this weekend in their final Merit League clash of the season.

“We’ve got a game on Saturday so we’ve got to make sure we do the right things now. We’ll be in doing recovery on Thursday and then match preparation on Friday.

“Barnet are a team who we’ve lost to twice, so we want to end the league season on a high by beating them.”
