Barker believes break will be beneficial

10 September 2014

Head of Coaching Richie Barker hopes the squad will be rejuvenated and ready for the return to competitive action at the weekend.

The Dons will take on Barnsley at Oakwell on Saturday, 14 days after beating Crawley Town 2-0 at stadiummk.

International call-ups meant the proposed clash with Sheffield United was postponed, but the players are back in training ahead of the trip to Yorkshire after being told to rest and recuperate at the back end of last week and over the weekend.

“There were two main reasons for the break – what’s gone before us in terms of the last two months which have been busy,” he told MK Dons Player.

“They’ve worked very hard and haven’t had much time off at all. Also, in terms of what is coming up over the next month or so with it being pretty much Saturday, Tuesday.

“We had a couple of knocks and a couple on international duty too, so it seemed the right time, both physically and mentally, to take a break.”

Despite the Dons not playing at the weekend, there were future games being arranged as they were drawn to host AFC Wimbledon in the second round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

He said: “You want to be at home in the cup. Certainly at the moment, we’ve made this a difficult place to come. Hopefully the fans are enjoying the way we are playing at stadiummk. It’s another cup competition we want to do well in and we won’t be taking it lightly.”
