Karl Robinson’s side went into the game on the back of their first League defeat of the season away at Peterborough United but returned to winning ways in emphatic style against the Boro to regain a Sky Bet League 1 play-off place, if only on goal difference.

Chelsea loanee Patrick Bamford opened the scoring after just 12 minutes when he climbed highest from Shaun Williams’ cross to guide a header into the far corner via the post.

The in-from striker then doubled both his and the Dons’ advantage with a cool finish from Luke Chadwick’s inch-perfect cutback before the men from MK1 added a third through 17-year-old Alli, who showed great improvisation to sweep Bamford’s pass beyond Chris Day.

Stevenage, though, were handed a lifeline just before half-time when Darren Potter inadvertently turned Luke Freeman’s low cross into the net, leaving his goalkeeper David Martin with no chance.

Greg Tansey had a chance to reduce the deficit even further for the away side with a 25-yard shot which he fired just wide of the upright before the Dons finally made the game safe when Alli was upended by Sam Wedgbury in the penalty area and Shaun Williams duly converted the spot-kick.

The lively Freeman did have a couple of chances to pull a goal back for Graham Westley’s side late-on but it turned out to be a comfortable day at the office for the Dons, who secured their sixth victory of a still relatively young season.
