Dave to box his way back to fitness

28 May 2014

David Martin will be swapping his goalkeeping gloves for ones more suited to Muhammad Ali this summer as he looks to prepare himself for the new season.

As the country gets set for the highly-anticipated bout between Carl Froch and George Groves this weekend, the MK Dons goalkeeper will be strapping on his own set of boxing gloves but unlike the two super middleweights, Martin will not be entering the ring at Wembley Stadium in front of 80,000.

Instead, the 28-year-old will be taking part in the same rigorous boxing workouts that helped him return to fitness following a length injury lay-off in the 2012/13 campaign, as he looks to prepare himself for pre-season.

Discussing his plans for the summer, Martin told mkdons.com: “Last year I did a bit of a boxing, which I’m looking forward to doing again because I felt pretty good coming back from it last year.

“It’s just training, a lot of glove and pad work. You don’t realise how much hard work it is until you actually do it - it definitely gets the heart rate up for an hour.”

He continued: “I’m also going away for a bit as well and I’ve got a lot of gardening to do so I’m sure that will keep me busy.

“After a long season, mentally you do want to switch off and relax, even though you want to stay active. After my holiday I’ll have about three weeks before we return for pre-season but I’ll be running and doing a bit of training.”
